Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper, and singer. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress as well as a singer. Queen Latifah was born and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was born and was raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah refers to an Arabic word which means "delicate and gentle". The cousin she had bestowed it on her at the age of eight. Latifah has always been large, at 5'10", she was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. At her school's game Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. The song got the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
